Red Campion (Silene dioica)

Collins, 64 ; Readers Digest, 70

This tall hairy perennial is very abundant in the woods and verges of this area.  It flowers from March to November in shades varying from bright pink to the much paler pink as a result of hybridisation  A good place to view the plant is the verge on the lane at Hassel Street, nearby, by coincidence, to the house where the late Gerald Campion, famed as the character actor in Billy Bunter, lived for some while towards the end of the twentieth century.

Silenus, the drunken God of Woodlands from Greek Mythology gave his name to this lively plant.
