Wild strawberry  (Fragaria vesca)

Collins, 116; Readers Digest, 138

This plant produces long runners at intervals to form new plants.  It is in flower from April to July.  The name is believed to go back to Anglo Saxon days before AD1000.  The plant is not very common in our locality but can be seen on the banks behind Podlinge.  It is easy to spot when in flower in spring time.  The petals are often longer than its sepals.  Although not especially common, it does favour chalky soils.
